In The Name of Bread for the Sake of Land

Installation, materials used; tin plate, moldy bread, white cloth, 1999

“In the name of bread for the sake of land”

The exhibition is below the ground which used to be a safe deposition of a bank. By playing the size of the gallery the artist created a big wooden room in the gallery connecting three rooms to each other from one entry. The walls of the rooms are covered with tin plates that are mainly used to cover inside of the coffins in Turkey. The artist flattened these plates and nailed them on top of each other to create a mass grave. When you walked in this mass grave the first feeling is void because it feels like it is empty inside. The only sign about life is a heap of moldy bread at the corner of the last room. The smell of the moldy bread captures the whole room and a little light coming on the top of the room beyond the thin white texture. By touching of the visitors, the tin plates get rusted with time. In the end, the artist invites us to question the life itself “in the name of bread, fort he sake of land” by reconstructing the once used to store money and precious goods of this underground space.
